Overview
Melanotan is a synthetic compound designed to mimic a naturally occurring hormone in the body. It was initially developed as a therapeutic agent for certain skin conditions but is now frequently sold online as a supplement.
Most commonly, Melanotan is used for skin tanning. It has also been explored for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) in men, as well as for conditions like rosacea and fibromyalgia. However, there is limited scientific evidence supporting these uses, and safety concerns exist, particularly with subcutaneous injections.
Important Note: Melanotan should not be confused with melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep.
How It Works
Melanotan mimics the body’s melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), which promotes the production of skin-darkening pigments (melanin). It may also act on the brain to help stimulate erections in men.
Uses & Effectiveness
Possibly Effective:
-
Erectile Dysfunction (ED): Early research indicates that subcutaneous injections of Melanotan may help men with ED achieve and maintain an erection. Side effects such as nausea limit its practical use, and the product is largely unregulated online.
Insufficient Evidence:
-
Skin tanning
-
Prevention of sun-related skin cancers via injection
-
Rosacea
-
Fibromyalgia
Melanotan’s effectiveness for most of these uses remains unproven, and its safety profile is still uncertain.
